Credit Card Companies
We would urge all serious credit card applicants to compare cards from all of the various credit card companies in the UK. Today’s credit card market can be segregated into the following categories: -
Online credit cards
Most credit card companies offer their services on the internet. Quite often they will have no physical branches (no high street presence). therefore with lower overheads and larger profit margins they will quite often more competitive deals (subject to terms and conditions) e.g., Egg, First Direct, Cahoot, Goldfish, Intelligent Finance, Mint, Smile, Capital One, Morgan Stanley to name a few.
High street credit cards (Banks and Building Societies)
These are the traditional banks and building societies with a high street presence e.g., Abbey National, Alliance & Leicester, Barclays, Co-Operative Bank, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, Nationwide and NatWest, Northern Rock.
Supermarket credit cards (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Morrison’s, Marks & Spencer etc.,)
Supermarkets seem to be constantly staying abreast of the market, and have began offering credit cards to the masses. These cards are often underwritten by the larger financial organisations but carry incentivized shopping arrangements for the applicant.
Affinity (charity) credit cards
Affinity cards (linked to charities) offer the credit card applicant the opportunity to make a donation on every spend. Some affinity cards can be affiliated with businesses, sports or brands. e.g., Breakthrough, National Trust, WWF, British Heart Foundation.
