Arranging the house move:-

First and most vital point - Don’t make any commitment to any of the following until you have exchanged contracts.

  1. Research and book a removal firm - Or removal vehicle - Ideally try to give 14 working days notice. You would be wise to insure your items you are moving!

  2. Arrange, purchase or attain removal boxes and cases for your personal belongings - make sure that you have enough.

  3. Arrange new insurance for the new home - this can take a week or so until you receive documentation. Additionally remember to change the insurance details of your cars from the move date.

  4. Request your final Telephone - Broad Band Bill - Try to leave 2 weeks notice for broadband as quite a few checks will need to be carried out.

  5. Organise the professional disconnection of any gas appliances you are taking - E.G., Gas ovens. - Ideally you will need a week notice.

  6. Take the final meter readings Gas, Electricity and Water - Try to do this on the day of the move or if you are asking the various representatives to take the readings allow for a weeks notice.

  7. Inform the TV Licensing Authority - Advise them of the move date.

  8. Inform the local authorities ie. Council tax - They are often impatient and extremely unfair if you fail to inform them. The Government always want their share!

  9. If you own a vehicle inform the DVLA of the move and have the documentation ready and complete to hand in after the move.

  10. Make your life insurance, health insurance or any other personal policy holders aware of the move date and location - Premiums can change.

  11. Cancel the Direct Debits or Standing Orders that are non transferable to your new home - you may have to visit the branch to do this and it is advisable that you inform the billing party of your intentions.

  12. Advise your current doctor, dentist or any other medical specialists of the move date - Arrange new providers if required.

  13. Cancel the delivery of newspapers and milk etc; - Be sure to make payment before leaving.

  14. Commence the defrosting of the freezer and fridge - If you are set on moving in with a full fridge freezer, you might want it turned up to the max for a week or so prior to the move. This of course all depends upon the relocation distance.

  15. Go to the Post Office and have your mail redirected - it can cost approximately £33.00.

  16. On the actual day of the move read all of the accessible meters for your utility services and log them down, so that you can advise your old providers of the final readings at a later stage.

Who Do I Notify about the Move?

  • Your utility companies
  • Water
  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Phone Company
  • Broadband Company
  • Council Tax
  • Home Insurer
  • Car Insurance
  • DVLA
  • Pension and Life Insurance Provider
  • Doctor, Dentists and any other medical specialists
  • Last but not least your Employer would love to know - they may even buy the wife some flowers for you!

The big Tips

  1. Don’t notify anyone of the change of address until you have exchanged contracts - If it all goes Pete Tong (Wrong) you will have to advise them all again and what a joy that will be.

  2. When selecting a removal company, check the contract and be clear on everything they will do within the charge and equally clear of any additional charges. Use a company that belongs to the British Association of Removers Tel: 0208 861 3331.

  3. Don’t leave thing to the last minute. Taking light fittings, shelves and mirrors etc., can take more time than you expect.

  4. Don’t pack everything that you own - Remember keep essential items in close reach. Items could include tea, coffee, powered milk, sugar, toilet paper, a hammer, some allan keys and a set of screwdrivers and even a few torches. This is going to be a very stressful day so preparation is everything.

Finally Good Luck from Re-Mortgage Market.
